How to install a Toyota 80 amp alternator, BOLT-IN! (HELP! STRANDED IN KAMLOOPS! NEED ALTERNATOR!)

Post by LeeBiew »

Anyone have an internal regulated alternator for an 83 or the mounting bracket for an 87?

So I managed to replace my alternator. I upgraded mine to a Toyota 80amp one. Bolt in! Just needed a longer belt.

'88 Landcruiser Diesel. You might need the longer bottom mounting bolt (I didn't use it, just reused the Tercel bolt minus the lock washer) from the Landcruiser alternator mount, the pigtail for the Landcruiser plug and a longer belt: #15410. The Landcruiser alternator is slightly wider than the Tercel mount bracket. I currently have left the empty gap there, but plan to throw some washers in to fill it in. Otherwise fits perfectly! The Landcruiser alternator had a double pulley on it, so I swapped mine over, but the double pulley would have worked just fine. The Landcruiser plug is different, but instead of replacing the plug, I spliced in the Landcruiser pigtail so now I have both. I can swap back if I wanted to (I don't see any reason to swap back, ever). I also wrapped the Tercel plug in electrical tape to keep any water out. Took me 20 mins total. Finished up the electrical system with a new (Group 34) 980 amp battery too haha. With the included battery height adapter, the battery fits so perfectly on the battery tray and under the clamp.

btw, my Tercel alternator was an internally regulated 83 larger style alternator. The Landcruiser alternator would not bolt in directly if it is the smaller +85 alternator, the bracket is different. So that mounting bracket would need to swapped as well as the alternator. No idea if the Landcruiser bracket would fit, never seen one.

The small gap on the bottom of the bracket, needs a few washers and a longer bolt.
