Re: Parts parts parts
You would be better with a donor car. The swap is straightforward but you need more than the trans and pumpkin to do it. There is a pretty detailed thread on it. I am driving my conversion with no issues at all. Very happy with how it turned out.

Re: Parts parts parts
Installing anythign from a wrecking yard is always a risk, but the toyota auto trans are fairly durable. the only worry is the regulator/ coupling between the front diff input shaft and the trans output shaft. You can likely save the one off your existing trans.

Re: Parts parts parts
We found a shop that will rebuild our auto, but when i asked if that included the 4wd part, he said no. I thought the trans axle was one unit? If we didnt have problems with 4 wheel drive before would it make sense to only rebuild the tranny? I wish i had time to do all this myself, im dropping a 22r ive been rebuilding (for 6 months) in my 83 4x4 longbed today!

Re: Parts parts parts
the front diff/bellhousing, transmission and transfer case all bolt together, but they are separate assemblies. I would not be too worried about the the transfer case, on the TErcel it is simple and robust, I have never even heard of one failing. there is a shift fork and I think a syncro like ring that could wear, but not very likely it is bad. consider how many times you shift in and out of 4wd compared to shifting from first to second, second to third, etc.
If you had trouble getting in and out of 4wd, it is very unlikley it is the fault of the transfer case. At most you will need a seal for the slector shaft, but that is easy to replace and a standard item (there is a thread that lists the part number for the selector level seal), and a rear out put shaft seal, which is also easy to replace. If you can get the seals the trans shop may just install them for you when they assemble the transfer case on to the back of the main gear box.
If your front diff is bad, that can also be replaced as a unit with a used one. the front diff assembly is fairly durable as long as it was not abused or ran dry. So unless you know it is bad, you are likely okay to resued the front diff assembly. you could pull the front cover and have them inspect it for you to verify it is okay, they would not likely charge you money to look at if you remove the front cover of the front diff assy for them.

Re: Parts parts parts
Awesome. Thanx for the info! Thats is actually just what i wanted to hear! Everything else seems fine, so just the tranny it is. Might look into changing diff gears for when we try the lift.
