GSP Axles

Post by Highlander »

I'm suddenly in the market for at least one set of GSP Front axles. I can't seem to find a supplier. Rock Auto doesn't have stock, nor list them anymore. Does anyone have a source for them? My newest terc is making BAD noises under power through left hand turns (i.e. going up the canyon to home), and I'd hate to get stranded (that's only happened when I've stripped out a timing belt-2X  )and ruin a nice terc in the process. Anyone have any other manufacturers that they would recommend, I really don't like the history that I've seen on the 'remanufactured' axles. I want NEW!!

This is most distressing! I could use 3 more myself eventually. Advance doesn't list them anymore either. Augh!

The only other possibility that I find is the EMPI axles at ~87 each. Are these new or Remans? Anyone know or have used them? Any idea what their quality is like if you have? I'm thinking that they are new, since there isn't a core in most cases. (I hope,I hope)

I just called GSP-North America and spoke with the same rep with whom I spoke last Fall.
Rock Auto is still a GSP vendor, as is Advance. He said the only reason either might not have them in stock is that they have either run out of that SKU or have elected to not restock them for the "vintage" Tercels.
However, either can reorder them, as the SKUs are still in their (the vendor's) system - he does have them for our Wagons in stock in GA or NC, even as we speak.
I asked about other vendors and he said that RA and ADV are the national vendors, but that there are other regional vendors who list/stock them as well - and to call him.
His name: Jason Lopez
Contact #: 1-800-243-7225
Email: jasonlopez@gspnorthamerica.com

Incidentally, while I had some probs on installation last Fall (see my threads on them), I have been completely happy with them (although only about 1K road-only miles on them). My "flinger fix" was to install the OE flingers and bend them out slightly. http://www.tercel4wd.com/forums/viewtop ... +gsp+axles
I don't think anyone else has made any adverse comments. The EMPI would certainly be a second choice, if only for the cost.
Send a PM to neonsport - he's been parting out keith's car and may have his EMPIs for sale - keith had installed the EMPIs last year and was quite happy. Incidentally, neonsport did the GSP himself last year as well.

I also ran into a post on a Nissan site - the poster said that Cardone was now supplying new axles, although I dunno if for certain Nissan models or for cars in general.

Thanks Archinstl, I had a touch of panic there. I'll call rock auto and have them order a set plus in for me, as well as mentioning that there are definitely people out here who prefer these axles over all of the rest.

EMPI axles are available at car-stuff.com. I was very impressed with them, but they don't come with flingers. I moved the old ones over to the new ones.

According to RockAuto, GSP Axles are NLA through them. CR**, Advance can get them, but they're on a par with the EMPIs in cost-$87.88 each plus a week to deliver. Don't try to order them online, their internet system doesn't list them. Thanks for the number of Jason, TOM- He helped out quite a bit.-- Almost a happy camper

I had some junk rebuilt ft. axles, clunked like mad and no tin dust rings. Really glad I kept my originals as I ended up getting them rebuilt by my local driveline shop for $90 each. Nice job, and I still have all the original dust flinging tin rings on both the inside and outside of each assy.

So, Highlander - are you getting GSP? And from whom?
Did RA state why they are NLA?

I'll be getting the GSPs from Advance -None of their other subsidiaries can get them it seems (Checker, aka Chuckleheads, Autozone, etc) 4 day delivery- $87.88 ea plus tax. , but the price is the same as the EMPIs and I don't have to fiddle with the flinger (I hope). :?: Has anyone found the P/N for KYB Gas-a-just strut inserts? I can find the rear shocks in gas-a-just, but not the inserts yet. The front end on this (Yo Trois) is going to be almost all new by the time I get done, but it's easily got another 200k to go before it dies
RA said that their distributor didn't have a number for the GSPs- I gave him the GSP P/N and he couldn't find it- said that they didn't have a listing if the dist didn't give them one, so he couldn't even order them, much less find them to order. I didn't have a problem with the guy, he tried, but I kind of thought that they could do something at least.

The GR2 is the only KYB available for the front. I think the Gas-A-Just were available some time ago but were discontinued. At least I thought I saw them listed at one time. but when I went to get them, they weren't listed. The GR2's are excellent though.

The GSP are $81.51 each; I did not look further.
I don't understand why RA couldn't find them when you supplied the numbers. The numbers on my RA receipt from October of 2007 are 293 NCV69006 and -005. Guess I got quite a deal at $100 incl. freight (w/disc. # supplied by neonsport or splatterdog).

I used GR2 on my car - best price was from Shock Warehouse in FL (free freight then) - see a thread I made last October or so. I checked directly with KYB and the Gas-adjust are no longer available for the Tercel, just as keith mentioned. I also used the KYB mounts and boots.

I just got an email reply from rockauto :
"Hi Mark,

At this time we do not carry those axles or have a way to get them. If you specifically want the GSP shafts, you will unfortunatly need to go to a different supplier.

Thank you,

Chris N
RockAuto Customer Service

SO, Those of you who got them- you got a screamin' deal, the rest of us just have to do it for ~60% more  , Oh well at least I'll be putting on new ones that won't knock from the word go. Thanks for the front strut info Keith and Tom, It saves me a whole bunch of looking. The newest of outr toys (yo d'or) is going in for emissions test today - it should pass this time. TVSV was messed up (AAP squirting EVERY time you pressed the accelerator), HAC now working (busted diaphragm in the dizzy) correctly, and changed out the EGR dashpot. My, it sure is nice to have spare parts laying about (even if you do have to remove them from the crashed car) :( .
Yo d'or now runs very well now, disregarding the knocking when you turn a left hand corner under power
Thanks guys.

This is just an update- finally got Yo-d'or through emissions (last time for that, though it'll be 25 yrs old nest year and registered as a collector car) What a pain!!! but then had to deal with the axle bangin away. The cange over was pretty painless - worse was changing the steering rack boots out what with all of the accumulated rust and butcher job alignments  (hey, don't bother using a WRENCH to turn the inner tie rods- a pipe wrench works just as well eh?). Unstuck the camber cam, amazing! now I have negative camber! whadda ya know, it steers better now. The GSP axle is great, what a difference, struts are next, but at least its drivable and not likely to blow an axle in the canyon. :D

Thanks for the update - I've been wondering.
Did the GSP flinger work OK or did you have to switch with the Toy OE as did I to avoid binding?
While I'm embarrassed to mention it now, as none of us recommended it before you bought the axles - did you install new axle seals? If not, keep an eye out for leaks there.
Incidentally - was Advance your source for the GSP as you mentioned previously? Others will wonder - and the cost?
