How to confirm 4a engine

Post by NWMO »

Hey all,

Hoping to purchase a JY 4a tomorrow, what are the best "confirmation points" to know I am getting a 4a (top and bottom). The engine is supposed to be out of an 85' Nova. Obviously the valve cover may have the sticker, but I'm thinking along the lines of stamped numbers, etc.

TIA,

I am pretty sure there is a serial number stamped in the block, near where the bell housing bolts on, that starts with "4AC-XXX" or something similar.

there would not be a 3a in a Nova, but the 4a and 3a look almost identical to each other. The 4a I am pretty sure was in a transvers installation, so a lot of the external parts (pan, motor mounts, coolant inlet and outlet, etc) would indicate it was in a transverse installation. I do not think the 3a was ever used in a transverse installation.

Thanks guys,

Hoping it works out. When I called him today and he figured out I was serious about the purchase, he said he would take a look to see for sure he still had it. I will call him tomorrow.

there are several version of the 4ac, not all have the "wavy" valve cover. all will bolt into the Tercel4wd no problem.
