Heater Core update and part request

Post by NWMO »

Hey all,

I haven't broken anything yet and I do have the heater core removed. Going to town to pick up some weather stripping and put back together.

However, I have figured out why the heat control slide arm isn't working.

Anyone feel like selling a control unit? or just the control arm needed?

I can probably JB weld a solution, but likely not nearly as strong as original.

I'm sure somebody will be able to weld that for you for a beer.

Jimcrazy,

Since I can't weld the broken piece until tomorrow, I'm cleaning and replacing all of the vent "foam" stripping. The biggest nuisance was scraping the old adhesive off so the new will stick.

Hey all,

Here are the final pics of the cleaned/reworked heater core housing with new heater core. Hopefully get the vent arm welded and start install tomorrow. I'm driving my wife's van tomorrow, but will be driving the Rusty Frog after that, hopefully with heat :)

That heat lever broke exactly where mine broke. I had it welded and it's still fine a couple of years later.

Hey all,

Got most everything back together early this morning. Working well, still doesn't run me out of the car, but it was single digits this morning. Windows are staying nice and clear, will post pics soon.

My Tercel slider controls are getting stiff from age, dust and cold weather. Seeing that broken part should motivate me to try to lube those parts.
I've had my heater unit out a couple times to clean out mouse nests. Plug those cowl vent drains with screens!

Ace,

I assume the cowl vent drain must share proximity to the fresh air intake for the ventilation/heater motor? I might look at placing a screen over the fresh air intake, I would expect a mouse could get through the cowl vent if they wanted, darn slippery little suckers. This might be good to combine with my upcoming floor/subframe repair, I may have access from the rusty bottom before repairing it  :D.

Hey all,

Here are some pics. Nice to get all the vent piping pretty clean, but what a pain getting back in place.

Thank goodness for the wood stove, kept the garage pretty cozy.
