Pipe & o-ring need replaced?

Post by NWMO »

Ok all,

Things aren't going quickly, but are going well. The one real concern as I prepare to replace the water pump is this short pipe and o-ring (connects water pump and thermostat housing). No replacement o-ring provided and the pipe is corroded similar to the water pump. Is this a typical auto part store part? How would it remove from cast part?

I only see one location for larger o-ring replacement, is there a second location I am missing?

You can get that o ring matched up from a kit at an auto parts store. There may be a link giving some measurements.

Wow, I have never seen an impeller that bad! Was there acid instead of antifreeze in the rad?

Marlin,

I would assume the car sat for extended periods and was likely not serviced frequently. The pic doesn't show it, but the interior of the pipe has similar pitting, hence my concern.

I think your only option for the pipe would be to find a used replacement in better condition. That is horrible corrosion for a part like that

There are many forum members here who probably have spare pipes for you. Your photo was a bit blurry.

Same o-ring fitting on each end, definitely needs replaced.

Page CO-9, by-pass pipe. If nothing else, I will investigate sleeving to solve the issue.

Hey all,

I found a thin brass sleeve that fit the bill after a little drilling in the by-pass pipe. JB Weld, tapped the sleeve in, cut off and cleaned it up a little. Should work well and only set me back $5 if you don't count the industrial size JB Weld :).

Hard to see in the last pic, but it's "pretty"!

Nice fix! That should provide reliable service for a very long time.
