One month update

Post by NWMO »

Good morning all,

Just wanted to provide an update as promised. I've chosen to drive a little more than normal, so in the first month I've put 2,500 miles on the "Rusty Frog", including 200 this morning to visit my sister and pick up these wheels.

Image

I look forward to getting them on this fall sometime. Almost all of the miles are highway at speeds around 65-70 mph (3,400-3,500 rpm). Car (with stock carb) is running great and getting 31-32 mpg. Looking forward to a mild (1") lift down the road, but probably wait till next year sometime. I am figuring to drive it to approx 100k this fall and then renew the timing belt, seals, water pump etc. I will likely wait to service/change the antifreeze at that time as well.

I've also got some rust mitigation that I will start working on before long. First good trip for the Frog should be a St Louis visit in early August. I hope to meet Tom and get some pics of the Frog and Goldie together.

Looking good. Love those mr2 triangle wheels. I put a set on my tercel, with some 195/70/14s, gives the car an extra inch in height, and it was day and night difference driving and in looks.

tg,

BF Goodrich 185/60 on them now with 50% tread, so that is where I will start. When I buy new tires I will go taller.

The quality and tread on these tires was a pleasant surprise, should get some good use out of them and help offset the $125 purchase price.

PS - I will likely be looking for the lug nuts for these wheels as well. The seller was a super guy that likes these old cars and said he would ship them to me if he comes across them. Actually I'm visiting a good friend down that way for the 4th of July. If he finds them (getting ready to clean his garage) I can pick them up then. But I'm not holding my breath.

NWMO, is that 100,000 miles in 3 months or did I read it wrong?
Timothy, sorry to be pedantic. If you increase your wheel size from 13" to 14', your lift is only 1/2".

Jonymoto,

My future lift will be suspension, the car has 91,500 miles on it now, so in four months or so I should approach the 100k mark.

As an aside, it appears the odometer is reasonably accurate, but the speedometer registers 2-3 mph too high. The taller tire may actually make the speedo more accurate.

I've been thinking of going going bigger wheels as well, but I was a bit concerned about the extra weight robbing hp from the engine. In fact I've bought two very good Suzuki Swift alloy wheels on ebay for $60. Tyres are about 75% new. They are 15" and they fit the Tercel. I'm looking for another 2 now. What are you doing about the spare wheel? Will you change that to 14" as well? If so, will it fit in the tyre well?
91,500m. That's not a lot for a 30+ yr old car.

Hey Jonymoto,

Interesting how many of us are engineers on here. I've been pleasantly surprised by the pep the 1.5 engine shows with the 4+ gear ratio, hoping it doesn't lose much going to the 14s.

I've not tried, but I don't expect the 14 inch wheel/tire will fit in the stock tire bay. I figure to keep the best 13 inch tire as a spare. If a front goes flat, I will have to swap a rear tire to the front and run the 13 in the back, but don't see that as a big deal.

Yes, most flat tyres don't go flat suddenly. Usually it's a slow leak which gives you plenty of time to get it fix as long as you check your tyres often, visual check is all you need to do.

That would be true if I only changed the rims, but sadly a 13" tires wont fit on 14" rims so I had the extra expenditures of tires but I took the opportunity to go as big as possible 195/70r14, 2" overall size increase, 1" lift

Sorry that makes sense, I was assuming that you changed the rims and used the same tyre profile (height) as the 13" tyre.

Timothy, for a while now I've been thinking of raising my car as well. I've got two 15" alloy rims already and I'm looking for another 2. I'm trying to work out what would be the biggest diameter tyre that will fit a Tercel without touching the fenders lock to lock. So your wheels diameters are now around 24". Does that give you plenty of clearance even though your tyre width is 195mm?

I have 15" 5 spoke Mazda Miata alloys with 185-55-15 tires, they are a 1/4" higher then the stock alloys wheels with 175-70-13 tires.
They do not hit or scrape the body anywhere, i can turn the steering lock to lock and no scrapping. They make the car ride away nicer and handle bumps a lot smoother, I'm totally satisfied with them.

Stock= 175/70/r14=22.6"x6.9"
Upgrade=195/75/r14= 24.7"x7.7" a little rub at full turn but easy to avoid that. Theses are on mr2 triangles not sure what the offset is
Possible tire sizes for your 15" rims depending on offset:
185/65R15 = 24.5x7.3R15
195/60R15 = 24.2x7.7R15
205/60R15 = 24.7x8.1R15
24X4.5R15
24X5R15
24.5X8R15

Thanks for the valuable info guys. what size is your spare wheel? Is it still 13" to fit in the tyre well?
