1984 Toyota Tercel DLX 4wd Automatic

Post by Buyser »

I have 6100.00 give/take into this vehicle, this includes the price I paid for it. I am the 3rd owner, the original owner had it until 2014. The second owner should not have had the opportunity to be near this Tercel. I have sought after Toyota factory parts when available, which are few and far between. If not factory then Japanese preference, any where but Chinese origin. I have had a difficult time finding the precision right Master tech to address the service/maintenance. The shop Toyrunner in San Luis Obispo CA is where I have had all work performed. I have told them several times, no Chinese parts. They slipped two Chinese made fuel pumps which became fauty. I became aware of the symptoms of a bad fuel pump from the first two realizing the third installed was giving out as well, they have not been able to handle the pressure. I parked the vehicle in hopes to find a good mechanic to address the third properly. Well simantaneously I found online kyosan fuel pumps available. I also found a older Toyota mechanic that really did not want to work on the vehicle but said bring it in. At that point which had been about a week the car being parked, it would not start. Just a subtle click sound which I believe is the starter. My wife had been already not pleased with me puting coin into this car, so I am unfortunately going to sell. I wanted to make this car done right. I have all receipts of parts and work performed. I have about 4200.00 in new parts/labor I will be able to go in detail as to what has been addressed with anyone having interest. I will let this car go for 2900.00, a price point low enough to iron out anything needing attention. Someone with the proper understanding of these vehicles will be getting a sound Tercel. Thank you for your time

Presuming the battery is charged, likely all you need to do is clean the battery terminals first (take them off the battery and use a wire brush or coase steel wool on both sides), and perhaps check the ground strap is not corroded at the contact. That usually solves the "click" and no start.

This is the most common reason a car acts like this, for some reason older cars seem to suffer more than newer ones. It is an easy fix. There are other reasons too, but corroced battery contacts are by far the most common. Where ever you got the battery usually will clean the terminals for free, but you have to get it there.

having a 30 year old car has it's perils, even for a simple and reliable model, small things are always wearing out, failing, falling off, etc. They are usually easy to fix, but if you have to take it to a repair shop to fix every minor problem (changing a fuel pump is minor, and easy to do in about 15 min or less), likely you are best finding someone that is more of a do it yourselfer.

Good luck.

In the photo of the engine compartment, there's a cylindrical shape part in front of the brake master cylinder/booster, I'm curious what it is. Can someone let me know, please, as I don't have one in either of my Tercels?
