can it be driven with the bad head gasket? could it be driven by doing the occasional stop and topping it up, or is it so far gone it is barely running? Do you know how bad it is?

If I can find a ride over there, I can either bring it here and fix it, or have to replace the head gasket there and dive it back to western Washington.

how is the suspension, brakes, clutch, etc? It looks decent, but want to know what else it would need to make it a good daily driver.

I know I would have the parts for it, just no means of getting it. Which makes me sad :(

No it couldn't be driven without changing the gasket. Just turns over doesn't want to start. The battery has been sitting so it would have to be charged. I was driving it everyday. The suspension was fine. Brakes work fine but I'm sure could use a good going over. Clutch has always been what I thought was a bit short but always worked. It's probably due for a new one as it has 170,000 + on it I'm guessing. Where are you at on the West side? I've towed it a few times with a tow dolly short distances. I'm debating on getting it running to make it easier for pickup.

I'm trying not to take it to the junkyard but there's not huge interest over here on the east side of Washington State. I picked up a different newer car so this one needs to go.

I am near Arlington, about 20 min North of Everett WA. There is an active market for these cars in the Puget Sound area, good runners get high prices and sell quickly. That is why I am tempted to go there, replace the head gasket and drive it back, it will add to the supply available around here.

I just do not have time to spare right now, still way behind in my work. If you can get it running so it can be driven you can sell it quickly on the west side. I would consider paying you more for it if you replace the head gasket, and get it so I can drive it here. I can clean it up and attend to any other repairs here, and than put it on the market.

if the weather is good, that is only a long day's drive to this Tercel4wd. You can collect it in a weekend, once the head gasket is fixed.

My parents would kill me though. Then I have to worry about getting it across the border.

border crossing is not such a big deal, but you have to plan ahead, you have to apply to Canada import authorty several weeks before you intend to bring it. I think you need to send a copy of the title, and they give you an appointment time and location where you will bring it across. when you get there they inspect it to make sure it has the original title, and it matches the VIN on the vehicle, to verify it is not stolen, etc. Several forum members have done it, not really a problem if you plan ahead.

It has to pass a safety inspection by your local mechanic before you register it (that you do after you get back home). So before you get it registered you have to make sure all the lights work, brakes, tires, fix any rust, etc it is all in safe condition. Sometimes they get picky about replacing rubber boots, old hoses etc (which has not thing to do with safety), but you need to plan a few days to go through the car so everything is in order so you can get through the inspection without too much trouble. best find a local mechanic you trust, will be more sympathetic and perhaps not so demanding. He might let you take it back and fix anything you find, and return. Many insist they must do the repairs before they would approve it, which is also BS, and I would find someone else before I took it to a crook like that. Some forum members have found this part to be a real PIA, others said it was no big deal. But what others have written about it, to insist on replacing a steering rack boot is stupid, that has nothing to do with safety.

Yeah I've got a local mechanic like that. But he told me he never wants to see a tercel again, after the last rust bucket I brought him... He prefers domestics.

Arlington is some distance away. So far I've only listed the car on here in hopes of finding someone who would appreciate it. I think I'll go ahead and list it locally and if it doesn't sell put a new head gasket on and relist it. I've just been working on other things and haven't gotten around to it lately. I appreciate all the reply's and the interest.

I might be interested in coming and fixing it then driving it back to Seattle. Do you have a place that could be used to work on it?
