The ultimate solution for obsolete exhaust systems

Post by splatterdog »

Exhaust system no longer available? I don't think so! I finally got one of my favorite tools. If only I had this a while ago, there would be a few more Bosal systems left for the rest of you guys. I can't wait to start bending! If I really get a wild hare, who knows, maybe I'll build a tube chassis for a T4 driveline! woohoo. Wait, better make some money with it first...

that is a pretty large investment, did you make a good deal on it? Get it used it looks like. Someone locally going out of business? That would be a great thing to add to the services you offer.

Perhaps you can give me a price for making an exhaust system for my 4age installation. You can sell two, one for me and one for Synth.

Oh - just - WOW !
Tool porn is the best (well, at my age, anyway...)!
Are there any Youtube videos of this machine in action?

Slightly OT, but - I have not yet installed what I think is the last full Bosal in the country (see threads last year) - the fix I did last October on the old rear pipe and muffler with JB Weld has held up remarkably well - still no leaks or further rust-through. Amazing!
I did paint the Bosal with umpteen coats of RustOleum Hi Temp black for BBQ grills - it should be "well seasoned" by now.

Heh-heh, I knew you would like it Tom. And of course, it's on youtube..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Z-ONiQadxw If you like tool porn, check out vids 7-10. those show some end finishing operations. Plenty of piston action and holes getting stretched.

Petros, it wasn't cheap but it was a good deal. Nobody had to go out of business either, at least on the machines latest sale. Got it for about 1/3 the cost of new while factoring in that we might have to spend just over a G for a 3 inch die set unless we find used. It's got a great die package otherwise and is in way better shape than many other benders I've seen and/or used. A few bending shoes/radius's will need some light rust polished off. All in all I'm likin it! I'd love to help you with you and Synth's systems, but until I build a 4age myself I won't have a jig good enough to ship pipes cross country. Best to find a good local guy even if you do it yourself. Not shop installed pipes almost always need some alterations.

It's getting crowded around the shop. :D

Well this thing is producing already. Came in today to "play with my new toy" as the wife said. Had to replace a center flex pipe on a 98 Saab. I can buy it prebent for $140 or make it for about 25 and a little extra labor. My pipe is likely heavier duty too. Many prebents use a gauge or two thinner tubing than I do. Not all prebents have inner braid on the flex section either, probably very few actually. Make more money, customer gets a better product, everyone wins!

And don't get too excited here Tom, but I already had to pull out the infrequently used male Buick ball expanding tool as shown in vid #8. Goofy Saabs...

One other cool accessory it came with was a rod bracket bender. It's similar to this, just not quite as slick looking as the huth's(bigger and thicker though)-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ir16fJsgVf0&NR=1. It will sure beat the hammer and vise method. Hopefully it can handle the thicker rod that I use for hook hangers. HD, thats how I build em.

Man I would love to have one of those! Soon I'm going to attempt to custom make about 1/3 of my old bmw's exhaust (the straightest part from the rear of the downpipe to the muffler). Not sure how well it will go, if I screw it up it's only $10 of ruined pipe. What's best to heat Aluminized pipe hot enough to bend it? Is this feasible or should I give up before I start? I will have access to a lift/jacks/air/etc.

That Huth bender is cool. Many years ago, at the beginning of the bike shop, I was too poor to even spend money on peg board hooks. I had this neat little bender and made my own! It was good up to 1/4" rod thickness. It was a manual version of what I guess you have, and fit in the bench vise. It was pretty handy for making "custom-sized" hooks.
Hey - I had a lot of time in between customers in 1973-74!

Real men go to JCWhitney and buy a 5' length of ss flexpipe.

Danzo, you will need oxy-acetylene to do heat bends. Do you have welder access? I've seen DIY angle cut, butt welded systems. Crude but effective. Maybe just take your pipe and visit a muffler shop with a case of beer and see what happens. haha

Takza, are you still a teenager? That's when I grew out of flexpipe. I even went as far as to pay Midas to fix my mess. At least you use SS I guess.

Tried out the bracket bender today and it handled 1/2 inch mild steel rod no problem. My bench vise will be happy about that. As am I...

I have a stick welder, but I'm a bit out of practice. I guess propane won't get hot enough to bend Al pipe. The muffler shop 'n' sauce trip may work best. Time is on my side, that car's not a priority right now. Thanks for the tips.

Galvanized flex pipe is a waste of time....the ss stuff lasts almost indefinitely...as long as you don't crush it.

I have no doubt about the SS being better, but I still consider any flex pipe as an emergency DIY patch. I've used the flexible SS on some truck mount carpet cleaning machines, as that's the way they are built. Those I will now bend out of aluminized pipe with a SS flex section, like the way most cars front pipes are made these days.

BTW, and I'm not proud of this, but my flex system on my first car was the worst DIY exhaust job I ever saw! And I've seen a lot. Damn teenagers...

Ok, after that last admission I thought I should redeem myself. Here's a little more recent work, done in 304 stainless!

That's something that MAYBE I couldn't do with ss flexpipe...but ALMOST! That's some good work there.
