Re: Valve cover gasket install

I've never put sealer on both sides of the valve cover gasket of my '83 Tercel because the maintenance recommends valve adjustments every 15,000 miles IIRC. Although I haven't done it that often in recent years, it doesn't hardly change. I have replaced the valve cover gasket every so often, they se...

Re: Mouse nest in heater fan, and suggestions for prevention

Yeah, cats are good to have around but I've lost several to other predators, and currently don't have cats cuz I'm not always there to feed them. I should clear back some of the bushes around my place so the hawks and owls can do their job better. Thanks for the tip on dryer sheets. I've used strong...

Re: Switching California emissions to Canadian

plugged carbon canisters are easy enough to unplug. i've restored even the most stuck ones, using a lot of carb cleaner, soaking, and compressed air. when i put a weber on my first terc, i removed the carbon can and let the vapor line from the gas tank vent to the atmosphere. i could always smell g...

Re: Switching California emissions to Canadian

The Factory Service Manual for my 1983 Tercel clearly shows all the components and connections for USA and Canadian setups. The FSM for your year would be a good reference to study before you attempt a change-over. I have kept my car all original except for disconnecting a plugged carbon canister.

Re: Mouse nest in heater fan, and suggestions for prevention

Thanks for the link and info. Now it is obvious to me that critters can go right up the cowl drain. The car was caked with mud until recently and I finally washed it and looked under there (with camera). I can stick two fingers up that gap, maybe big enough for a chipmunk. If you pour water into the...

Re: 2 normal spark plugs and 2 carbon fouled

I saw this post linked from another recent discussion (about trying to pass smog testing) and thought I would bump it up because it has a lot of potentially useful info. My Tercel is now 30 years old and I suspect I have some of these issues myself.

Re: Transmission Clicking

A few decades ago I had a clicking/ticking noise in the transmission of my 1956 Willys Jeep (which I still own). I tracked it down to a chip in the reverse idler gear, no doubt caused by careless shifting. The reverse idler gear spins all the time with the countershaft, so it clicks according to eng...

Mouse nest in heater fan, and suggestions for prevention

I live in a rural area where wild mice are a fact of life. I used to have outdoor cats for rodent patrol, but not lately. I did a forum search and noticed that some of you have had mouse infiltrations, although I think those were mostly on unused parts cars? This summer my Tercel (primary transporta...

Intermittent no-crank situation in damp weather

Over the last winter my 1983 Tercel sat outside in very wet weather and was used just occasionally. On a few occasions the starter would not engage on the first turn of the key, but on the second turn it would promptly crank and start. On one occasion last month it just clicked the first several tim...

Re: choke breaker jet not working

I will just say that a good-working automatic choke works good, and is better than a manual choke IMO. I've had my '83 Tercel since 1984 and the only thing I have had to do with the choke is very occasionally spray some WD-40 (what I had available at the moment) on the associated linkage if it was h...

Re: Can I safely disable the 1985 HAC?

It would be helpful to consult a Factory Service Manual for the diagram of the vacuum lines. It should show the connections for cars with and without HAC.

I added HAC to my car years ago because I often drive over 4000 feet. It provides no benefit under 3500 feet, or whatever the trigger point is.

Re: manual gear oil leak??

I also have an '83 4x4 wagon. On the clutch linkage issue, it may be the auto-adjuster plastic rachet off the pedal under the dash (which Petros has already mentioned). When I first got my car in 1984 the clutch linkage had a slight slip and click when the pedal was first depressed. After inspecting...

Re: Drum brake locked

I once had a rear drum brake dragging heavy after driving on an extremely rough road. When I coasted up to a stop sign on pavement I noticed the car wasn't rolling freely. I drove it a short distance to get home and noticed a rear drum was hot. I think I was able to back off the brake adjuster throu...
