Re: Leaking differential?
if it is on the bottom of the trans case, almost certainly it is coming down from somewhere else. If it is not a lot, I would just check and top up periodically. the most common sourse of gear oil leaks on the trans axle, in descending order, is as follows: the CV axle output shaft to diff housing s...

Re: INT / intermittent wipers?
some of the base models only had low and high wiper modes, but most later ones also have an intermittent setting. However, someone discovered the Same years toyota Forerunners have adjustable intermittent wipers multi switch that will fit into the tercel. a good junk yard find, you will have to trim...

Re: rock auto not the cheapest option anymore?
I just bought a carb rebuilt kit from my local Autozone for $36, next day arrival and no shipping cost. rock auto was more for the basic kit, and much more with shipping, and many days to get it. Always compare between different sources, sometimes rockauto has killer deals (at random), sometimes not...

Re: Refreshed paint job
I might consider that with my daily driver. I keep after getting minor blistering and rust pitting around the wheel wells, fender lips, and rocker panels. I will sand them off, hit it with rustolium primer and than color coat it. It looks good for a few years but than returns again.

Re: Dies after high speed and/or prolonged run time.
metal lines can get corrosion pits that allow air to get sucked into the fuel line as it runs. so do not overlook inspecting the metal fuel lines as well. I assume you have replaced the fuel filter, and checked the screen at the fuel line inlet to the carb. it is fairly easy to check the fuel pick u...

Re: Turbo 4age tercel
that is a lot of fine effort and expense going into a funky old econo-box of a car. that will really be something unique, and quite the sleeper! I am curious what a "DIY megasquirt" is that you are using. it is homemade? can you make one inexpensively? or it is modified megasquirt (that is...

Re: what kind of cleaner to use during carb rebuild?
Muriatic acid is simply hydrocloric acid but sold in hardware stores and pool supply stores. white vinegar might also work, but you must soak it much longer. back when I was in high school autoshop we had this nasty acidic parts dip for carburetors. we put the parts in a metal basket and lowered it ...

Re: Carburetor Replacement
That mechanic is way over charging, or he does not know what he is doing so is way over padding his estimate. It only takes about an hour to remove and rebuild the stock carb, and at worst, an hour (or less) to trouble shoot it and sort out the vac lines and systems. I would not take it to him, most...

Re: Weber carburetor questions
the PVC valve should not be connected to the EGR, they perform separate unrelated functions. I think perhaps sorting out your installation it might help to do some homework: read the chapters in the FSM on how each system operates. From there it will I think become easier to figure out how to make i...

that car is now almost 40 years old, and you were the original owner? you really got your use out of it. good luck in finding a new owner, it looks decent and it should be fixed and put back on the road. I do not have the time or space for it. hopefully someone will save it.

Re: Cut an access hole ahead of stick shift
I have never seen anyone do that, and there would be no reason to. access that plug is not too bad from the tunnel under the car if you just unbolt the rear cross member, and lower the rear of the trans (without removing anything else).

Re: Amazing 1984 Tercel Rally Build by Verve Racing
there is not much of the original Tercel4wd left, just some sheet metal body. the roll over can be attributed to the all new (and unproven) suspension, front and rear, as much to the extra hp. it states it is "stock ride height" but that does not look correct to my eye. that is a very costl...

looks very nice. likely worth the price, if it is actually as good as they claim.
but I would hate to spend that much to get the stock 62 hp, for that much effort he should have upgraded the engine to a 4afe or 4age!

Re: 1988 Tercel DX Sedan 4D for sale (needs engine)
Usually when it over heats it just needs a head gasket, and perhaps to have the head resurfaced. I have replaced head gasket in these toyota Tercels in about 4 hours and with only about $40 worth of parts. No special tools required, except perhaps a torque wrench (which you can rent if you do not ow...

Re: Oh boy, valve knock? Video inside
I highly recommend install only new exhaust valves. New ones do not cost much, I have seen too many exhaust valves disintegrate with time, often trashing the engine when the come apart. Well worth getting new exhaust valves when you redo the valves seats. intakes are safe to regrind and reuse if not...
