Re: 85 4 wd CA smog problem

EGR passages do like to clog on these big time. On my 84, the egr port thru the intake had volvanic like crust that required a drill to repoen the hole.

Re: Taking the plung, Weber Carb

(I get upper 20's around town.) Sounds like you've got a little more tuning to do. Or do you play the offense on the road? Neither of mine have gotten below 30 post weber. Usually 31-32 almost hitting 35 once. And that's on our corn fed gas.... Sub zero starting could be better, but once it's going...

Re: the more things change...

I wonder if theirs will still be working after 25 years. Car electronics are not unlike all the other cheap electronic products out there. Throw it away and get a new one.... But, I can see many "modules" becoming obsololete by the time the vehicle's 10-15 years old. And when they are avai...

Re: hesitation w/ fast idle cam step

Maybe too much choke? To get the cam to step down, you have to give it some gas. Accelerator pump squirt on top of a too rich choke could be causing your stumble. The FSM doesn't have a spec for how far it should be open with the breaker applied to the choke plate. But if you look at the checking pr...

Re: Taking the plung, Weber Carb

That's pretty much the going rate...

Just make sure they will swap out the air filter element. The kit one is too tall. You will need the shortest element to clear your hood.

Enjoy!

Re: hesitation w/ fast idle cam step

With the breaker bad/disabled and only a paper clip to hold it open , it's your choke plate that's out of sync. The cam only does what the spring tells it to.

Fix carb or better a weber! Don't forget to do the mandatory vacuum leak check on all the old plumbing.

Re: Junk from China?

A while back I got one of those hose clamp assortment boxes at harbor freight. Totally worthless. They would strip at the first sign of tension.

Keeping on top of which stuff is good or bad(foreign or domestic), is just going to keep getting tougher I'm afraid.

Re: How to save old Tercel4wd?

I'm absorbing as many as I can handle! If I had the space I might be up to a dozen by now.... Maybe if someone was crafty enough to cover their tracks and send these vultures on wild goose chases a bunch of times. Maybe even have a few meet each other! They might tire of c-list after a lot of wasted...

Re: Loss of a loved one

Field beater would be fun. Putting it back together might not be as bad as you think. Long ago I saved an old Subaru that had been curbed hard enough to put the the whole wheel halfway under the car. It did at least 5 years of pizza running after that incident. Your pics don't quite show everything ...

Re: SPRINGS & SHOCKS

fawmaine- I like the 80's Valvoline slogan- "change your oil, not your engine" This applies to just about everything that requires oil. Sometimes automatics can freak out with fresh fluid. Haven't seen it myself, but there is a lot that can go wrong in an auto. My 84 came with shiny gray g...

Re: 195/70/14 tire dilemma

I think I will keep the full size spare that our cars were lucky enough to come with. I don't think sustained 80mph is recommended for fat moped tires. Those donuts are a joke and would be best served as a funny one time burnout experiment. I would almost go against every fiber of my being and carry...

195/70/14 tire dilemma

They barely go halfway into the spare hole, even flat!

Punctured a sidewall on one of my new tires at my friends farm last weekend. :(

Re: Get drunk ruin engine

Maybe start by fixing the kid??? Reminds me of a cousin who boasted about waking up in the ditch, car still running and in drive! Rusted rings need to be considered. If the bore is rusted it's safe to say the rings are too. Can the pistons still be moved around the bore side to side slightly? This w...
