Re: Tercel differential rebuild questions

Found this video which describes it as a loose pinion nut https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvmZ1xNTzAE&ab_channel=TomMorton Wow, neat video. I've never heard or seen anything like that before. If this is indeed the same problem as you are having, I wonder what caused it to happen. Like I mention...

Re: Tercel differential rebuild questions

Esaus, what are the noises you hear on deceleration when in 2wd?

I honestly can't recall anyone here having a rear diff go bad on them. The closest I can think of to that is mixing gear ratios when replacing the trans but that doesn't sound like your issue. Did it have a leak and run out of gear oil?

Re: fuel issue?

Hi Frank. Your post isn't very clear -- it sounds like you're saying your car used to have a cold starting issue, but now it won't start or run at all without pouring gas down the carb. Do I have that correct? If I have that right, my first question is when did you last replace the fuel filter? Unle...

What was wrong with the clutch installation? Did you get it sorted out?

Re: Hard to start cold engine

I agree with Jarf, most of what you describe is normal for carbs. You have to step on the gas at least once to set the choke when it's cold, and once it's warmed up you shouldn't have to do that to start it. There is a section in the owner's manual that covers this stuff. The only thing that stands ...

Re: Drove for 5 miles with the parking brake on.

Welcome to the forum, aslich713. You should definitely inspect the park brake for function, and the rear brakes overall. I would engage the park brake and jack the back end up and look at spot just underneath where the park brake handle is. There is a metal bar there that that the two park brake cab...

Re: Hard to start cold, hestitation under acceleration

If you look at the rear of the carb you will see a cam with steps in it. These steps control how much throttle is automatically given at idle while the engine warms up. If things are not set correctly, you can end up starting with not enough throttle, or with the opposite problem where the engine is...

Oh, is the vac advance unit on the top of those distributors? I think I remember seeing that once.

Re: 1986 sr5 on bring a trailer

Wow, it sold for $10,250...in USD! I had assumed it was in CAD since the car is in Canada but nope. So in Canadian, that's over $14k. I hope the buyer is someone who has lots of disposable money and isn't putting themselves into debt for what they believe is going to be a mint car that won't require...

new vacuum advance unit, part # SMP 43898YM

I bought a replacement vacuum advance unit off of ebay recently, even though I wasn't sure if it would fit on our cars (the listing said it was only for 1982 tercels, which didn't make any sense to me but still had me unsure about forking over so much cash for it). It arrived yesterday and I install...

Re: Collapsed Rings? Bad idle..

I hope some others chime in here because I'm running out of ideas. It doesn't really sound like a timing issue but just in case, have you verified the crank and cam gears are at TDC on the compression stroke, and the distributor rotor is pointing to 10:30? Next idea is a plugged fuel filter. You can...

Re: Blown head gasket scenarios/ diagnosis

I flushed the system several times and even filled it with vinegar. I managed to get it somewhat clean but its still heavily dirty. Ive since then driven maybe 7000km with the car. Compression is 175psi on all cylinders, it doesnt use oil or have contaminants in there or use any coolant. Havent man...
