I re-installed the distributor and timed it with only moderate improvement last night. She is still idling very rough and her exhaust smells horribly of unburned fuel.

Check that it is wired correctly.
Tercel ---------------stereo
Black/white---------yellow (battery constant 12v)
Pink/blue------------red (switched ignition 12v)
White/black---------black (ground)

(Primary color/stripe color)

Your right Petros it was a radar detector I was thinking of not a security system.

It was really jammed on there. I had to tear it down completely. It took tapping it off with a hammer. Once I got it off and put a little oil on the signal rotor shaft it slid back on and rotated nicely. I put it all back together. Hopefully I will have time to put it back on tomorrow.

I think there used to be a car alarm brand called escort. It could be a component for that system.

He actually wanted to put a 20 valve in it but his health was a limiting factor. As you know it isn't worth paying someone to do the work. It was a project that his nephew had left him with.

I think I may have found the problem.
As you can see my distributor is seized at full mechanical advance. Do you guys think this is the source of my problem? It's very stuck! I think I'm going to have tear it apart to free it up.

I went and salvaged the transmission from this one. Also pulled some marker lenses. Two real fun Toyota guys owned the car and we just chatted while I worked.

Yes, I just changed the spark plugs and wires and when I did I paid close attention to how the electrodes looked. I did make sure that all vacuum lines were routed as I replaced them referring to the color coded vacuum diagram posted in the repair guides. I'm going to check for vacuum leaks today. I...

I'm still having drivability issues. Ever since I replaced my vacuum lines it's been idling very low and erratically. I saw a simple and inexpensive basket at Fred Meyer not too long ago. It was nothing fancy and used a simple u-bolt style attachment.
