Make sure the three ports at vac adv are hooked up correctly. The HIC port has a pinhole. Usually its on top passenger side but i have seen it on top drivers side once

How much oil was in the tranny? 4 quarts is full, less than two is bad. Usually there are signs of running hot like blackend or browned gears/ shafts. If no signs of low oil/heat i would save the synchros that are not worn to no gap. And fifth gears if they are not chipped. Not much else is worth sa...

If so i pull using simple puller and install using large deep type socket and knock it on with hammer. Have to make sure synchro notch stays lined up and dont forget to have shift fork hooked up. I do not know how many times I forgot the shift fork

Did you get this done. I assume your refering to 5th gear assy on front driver side of tranny.

Skirt may have fallen off piston #3 or 4 and is burning oil because cylinder is now scored. Or piston is cracked, but that usually does not cause loss of oil, and knocking quiets down when engine warms up. Broken wrist pin will score cylinder too. I have had all three happen. I have had several carbs with the butterfly hanging up. It gets worn out on one side . If you disconnect throttle cable and start the engine and work throttle gently letting it back down to idle. If idle is high see if a light push down on linkage brings it to lower idle. If so it could be the butte...
