Re: Switching California emissions to Canadian
Based on my experiences with the fed emissions, if you unplug the ecu the car won't idle (it'l run tho.)

Re: oil in the airfilter
Itoo suspect bottom end failure (compression rings, pistons, or cyl. bores.) A cylinder leak-down test should let you know for sure. Only other possibility i can think of is plugged baffle in valve cover (unlikely.)
Good luck.
Good luck.

Re: '83 tercel for parts/repair
you're gonna need the rear diff too ('83's had 3.73 gears- '86's had 4.10 gears.)imgfx wrote:I am interested in the transmission. I am in Atlanta so it would have to be pulled and sent.
Let me know what it would take to get it.

Re: Converting an auto trans to a stick shift - its possible
I installed the m/t cut out from the underside because it was actually 2 layers of metal thick and wouldn't mate up real well with a/t floorpan if installed on top. Also, there's only about 1/4" clearance between the shifter console and the radio surround panel in the original configuration and...

Re: Converting an auto trans to a stick shift - its possible
Kinda manuvered the m/t piece around till it went thru the hole in the trans tunnel. As for the clutch switch, the '83 donor vehicle never had one (never liked them anyway- i bypassed the switch on my '88- never can tell when you might want the option of engaging the starter while in gear- ie gettin...

Re: Converting an auto trans to a stick shift - its possible
marlinh- I didn't notice a width diff in the main floorpans- only the very top portion of the tunnel. I had the carpets out of both cars (actually swapped them- the good car had been sitting for 9 years and the mice had made meais or nests out of parts of the carpet.) Anyway, i cut the top portion o...

Re: Converting an auto trans to a stick shift - its possible
I completed the 'sex change' operation on my '87 a/t car a couple months ago. Like you noted, the a/t floorpan seemed too "wimpy" to support the 4wd shifter and the whole top of the floorpan was shaped differently, so i cut it out of the donor car and screwed and glued it into the '87. The...

Re: Vacuum Advance
Got my two yesterday- looks like they'll work just fine. Thinking of installing one in my '83 and setting the timing at full advance (45-47 degrees with full vac and mechanical advance in.) Don't think i'll have a ping problem since i've always run premium gas.
Any thoughts?

All that stuff looks like it's for an '87 sedan (gen 3- transverse mounted engine.) Won't fit our cars.

Re: No spark, new distributor
Most likely, the unknown wire is the feed for the tach. My money's on a defective rebuilt dizzy (never did much care for rebuilt parts- would much rather have used OE.) One thing i really like about our cars is the whole ignition system is inside the dizzy- i always carry a spare whenever i'm doing ...

185/70-14 also fit without rubbing (with stock suspension)- throws the odo off by about 7% with the higher profile.
