Re: The Successor to the Tercel SR5 4WD
Does anyone make a simple, light, little 4wd wagon anymore? What about the new Ford Fiesta AWD?

Re: aggressive tires and lift
somewhere on this forum is a picture of a Tercel4wd with really large balloon tires that allow it float on the water. I search and searched but could not find the image. I think it was scanned from a picture in a magazine.

Re: The Successor to the Tercel SR5 4WD
the subarus are too heavy and too large, also poor economy. Strangly the Legacy wagon, desite the larger body does not seem to have more room than the Tercel. I think their reliability is also overrated, heard too many scary stories about leaks, head gaskets, heater core failures, etc. as they age. ...

with the new higher prices for clean ones, this might have even been a profitable purchase with a rebuild. As long as it was sold out of state.

Re: How steep is that hill, really?
The "percent grade" is a ratio of rise over run. An 8 percent grade means you will rise 8 feet for every hundred of travel. It is the same as the "tangent" function (x/y). So a 100 percent grade is 45 degrees (rise and run are the same). So a 12 percent grade is Tan-1 (.14)= 7.97...

Re: for sale: '66 tank that runs on whatever fuel you have
most diesel and turbine engines can be made to run on any fuels, not always efficient but it will run. Turbines are NOT efficient at all in small sizes, but they are very compact for their hp output, the reason the military prefers small turbines to power its equipment, light, compact and can run an...

Just so everyone knows, this is what we are talking about:
Great little 4wd car, only thing I do not like about it is the Seven (!) airbags waiting to explode into your face. Give me a full harness any day.

Re: Don't Dismiss Dealer
He had just mistaken you for a person who really needed a new car. Thought for sure you were going to buy something based on the condition of the Tercel, he was already figuring he will be able to make this months rent payment. Funny how when you said you were there for parts the whole idea of selli...

Re: Timing Belt job
I do not like the starter trick (too uncontrolled), I like the method developed by another list member: remove a spark plug, with the piston on compression stroke (so both valves are closed) insert throught the spark plug hole a length of soft cord (leave the end hanging out). Rotate engine unitil t...

Re: 1986 sr5 4x, intro here.
Welcome to the list. Nice ride! too bad there are not a lot more around in that condition. Be careful with the extra lift, it will do damage to the cv joints, the struts and the rear u-joints (because of the steep angle). I would limit it to an inch unless you shim down the cross members (which mean...

Re: Timing Belt job
the front main crank seal and/or cam seal are most likely source. I could be coming from the oil pan gasket or oil pump gasket (the oil pump is right behind the large pulley), but that is much less common. It is not that difficult to remove the the broken bolt without power tools, but it would be mu...

Re: Flooded Engine...easily
you do not need the vac advance for it to run well. What it does is advance the timing when at a part load condition (like on a hwy cruise speed) to improve the part throttle economy. So your hwy fuel economy will improve when it is working, but it will not be noticeable much if it works or not. If ...

Re: Flooded Engine...easily
It sounds like the float valve is not working correctly. Remove the float and put in a can of gasoline, if it floats it is fine. They can get saturated, but not very often. Also, with the top of the carb off you can check function of needle valve by gently blowing into the fuel inlet (use a short le...

Re: CV boot replacement questions
I was inspecting under my car this morning and discovered a damaged boot (on an axle with good cv joints). So inspired by David Lucas Barns I did my own "instant boot" repair. I cleaned off the outside of the boot and wrapped about 10 or 12 layers of heavy duty saran wrap around the boot (...
