Re: Ignition problem

Problem update: Installed new coil, rotor and cap the other day. The small gasket that the coil sits on was broken/cracked in two areas and applied some pematex gasket seal to fill the small voids in the two cracks. Well, so far it starts right up even after a rain. Going to monitor it this week to ...

Re: AC idler pulley continued

Thanks for the reply and generous offer Tom, hold on to it for now, at this point trying to see if the slight front to back movement of the pulley is normal. Hopefully some other members will take a quick look at theirs and report back.
Thanks again!

AC idler pulley continued

Removed the AC idler pulley and the bearing seems ok, no roughness. The bearing doesn't appear to be serviceable and not intended to be removed from the pulley assy. I also have a 1983 Tercel hatchback and took a look at the AC idler pulley to see if there was any front to back movement in the pulle...

Re: Ignition problem

Problem update: In the process of removing the dissy. cap I observed a white powdery residue on the dissy. aluminum casting where the forward most mounting bolt and condenser mount. Further examination revealed a hair line crack on this location of the dissy. cap. My first thought was that I had fou...

Re: Ignition problem

Problem update: As stated previously, I waited for the next time the engine would not start, placed the key in the run position and while under the hood put a jumper wire to the triggering wire of the starter. Before attempting to crank I also placed a spark detector lamp on #1 cyl. and also placed ...

Re: Ignition problem

Ok, this is my plan: I have traced the black trigger wire from the starter to a white junction connector near the battery. If and when the engine does not immediately start, I will place the key in the run position and proceed to unplug the white connector and place a jump wire on the starter side o...

AC idler pulley

Thinking It soon will be necessary to replace the AC idler pulley. Does any one know if a new replacement bearing can be pressed in in instead of trying to find the complete discontinued pulley assy?

Re: Ignition problem

Thanks for the replies. My theory is that I have spark some times but have not been able as yet to confirm it. I am leaning toward what Mark thinks but if it is malfunctioning only some of the times the only two options are to take a chance and replace the switch or set up a bypass circuit that can ...

Re: Ignition problem

Thanks for the reply! Problem update: The starter is very good, no problems there. I recall having a similar problem with another car years ago, but can't remember what the solution was unfortunately. This said I asked a friend who is an excellent auto mechanic and works for a dealership. I presente...

Ignition problem

I have been posting regarding the OEM carburetor flooding problem and have discovered some thing new. The engine attempts to start only when the ignition key is released and returns to the run position. Having run out of weather and sun light I couldn't confirm my suspicion that for some unknown rea...

Re: Carb. choke breaker question

It is coincidental you saying this! The other day I found the jet in question and attempted to suck on the vac. line on the carb. side of the jet while holding my finger on the line on the opposite side and of course no suction was observed. Then I tried sucking on the same line this time without bl...

Re: Carb. choke breaker question

Thanks for the reply Mark! The Jet that was on there allowed no air at all to pass through, so I eliminated it and ran a continuous section of line between the two points. Just wanted to make sure that I didn't shoot myself in the foot in doing so.

Carb. choke breaker question

Does anyone know what the plastic jet located in line between the vacuum port on the bottom right side of the carb. and the bottom back port of the choke breaker diaphragm is for?

Re: OEM carburetor issue

Thanks for the reply and offer, but I would like to isolate the problem before throwing any money at it. The carb. was recently rebuilt and therefore has new parts. I still think the problem has some thing to do with an adjustment of the accelerator pump linkage.
