Re: Fully restored Blackhawk CO

looks very nice. likely worth the price, if it is actually as good as they claim.

but I would hate to spend that much to get the stock 62 hp, for that much effort he should have upgraded the engine to a 4afe or 4age!

Re: 1988 Tercel DX Sedan 4D for sale (needs engine)

Usually when it over heats it just needs a head gasket, and perhaps to have the head resurfaced. I have replaced head gasket in these toyota Tercels in about 4 hours and with only about $40 worth of parts. No special tools required, except perhaps a torque wrench (which you can rent if you do not ow...

Re: Oh boy, valve knock? Video inside

I highly recommend install only new exhaust valves. New ones do not cost much, I have seen too many exhaust valves disintegrate with time, often trashing the engine when the come apart. Well worth getting new exhaust valves when you redo the valves seats. intakes are safe to regrind and reuse if not...

Re: Anyone else have a fuel gauge that goes down halfway almost instantly?

sound like the resistance coil is worn away just below full on the sender. sometimes taking it out and cleaning the contact helps. I have also bent the little arm with the contact on it so it made better contact with the resistance coil also helps. but if the coil is worn away, there is not much you...

if it is in decent mechanical shape that is not a bad buy.

but it looks more like an '87, the '88 model year had different seats.

Re: Do I need to be able to remove all filler plugs?

you can fill from any filler hole becuase on the manual trans it shares the gear oil between gear box, diff housing and the transfer case. you just have to go slower towards then end, to give time for the thick oil to makes it way into all the compartments. filling from one it might appear "ful...

Re: Distributor vacuum advance diaphragm adventures

that is interesting and good to know the Samari vac advance fits the same (I wonder if the whole distributor will also interchange perhaps?). you can connect both the idle port and manifold port to the same vac port on the diaphrame with a simple T fitting, since they go to the same side of the vac ...

Re: '86 T4WD SR5 wagon added to wrecking yard in Salt Lake City, UT on 9/13/2022

what a shame. I bet they took it to the local auto repair shop who told them it was not worth fixing. ignorant fool who likely knew nothing about this car, that could sell for $4000 plus in running condition. he would not say that about a $3000 civic, but that old tercel could not be worth much... check all your vac lines are good, not cracked or leaking, and routed properly (that always comes first...consider all of them are the same age as the one you found leaking), and check for all other sources of vac leaks. than run through all of the carb adjustments in the FSM (available for down loa...

Re: parting out 1983 sr5 wagon

why are you parting it out? the body in the pictures looks decent, dent and rust free bodies alone are getting hard to find. it might be worth assembling the parts and getting it back on the road, a running tercel in the PNW will sell for $4000 and up, even if not perfect. that is likely way more th...

Re: 84 Tercel 4wd

there is a linkage from the throttle to a lever on the auto trans that is adjustable. make sure the ATF in the trans is topped up (in fact it is a good idea to change it, and add some valve body cleaner additive to the ATF). with fresh fluid shifting issues usually go away, but you can also adjust a...

Re: Erratic Idle - If it Idles at All

check all the vac houses are connected and routed properly. also, you might try spraying the carb down inside and out with carb cleaner spray. that will get any build up off the butterfly throttle assembly. I also spray all the linkage occasionally with LPS or WD40, or similar, to keep it from stick...

Re: New to me Tercel rundown

you can fabricate a gasket from stock gasket sheet material. also a sheet of soft copper or aluminum should work to make a metal gasket too. your engine sounds like it has a vacuum leak into the intake system. check for leaks using some spar starter fluid, with it running, puff the fluid at various ...

Re: clutch, clutch cable, and adjuster questions

I have seen the pressure plate assembly on the cheaper imported clutches go weak and act like a worn out clutch. it can not grip the otherwise good friction disk. if the presser plate assy spring is weak, the clutch cable/lever/pedal will all be in the correct location (since the disk is not worn ou...

Re: I Need A Rear Diff

the third member in the axle housing is a direct swap into the axle house for the early and later gear ratios. I have done it several times when I got a fixer that had mis-matched front and rear ring and pinion ratios. no worries, you just need to swap out the third member. that is far easier than s...
