Re: Oil leaking from head gasket

The problem is, any leaks above the sump would occur only when the engine is running. When it is shut down overnight, the oil drains back to the sump and doesn't leak. I've put down some plates (everything else blows away) under the engine/transmission and the drips are from under the transmission. ...

Re: Oil leaking from head gasket

I'll probably get some carb or brake cleaner and clean up the area with an old toothbrush and some shop towels tomorrow. There might be enough oil flow at idle to let me see the leaks in my driveway.

Re: Need carb help

Also when you removed the carb, did you tighten it down enough when you replaced it? Maybe there's a vacuum leak at the gasket.
I assume you checked the idle speed when the engine was warm and the choke was fully open? Did you verify that the throttle was fully closed?

Re: Need carb help

1000 rpm isn't too bad. My auto is supposed to idle at 800. I originally couldn't bring the idle down to within spec on my current car. As some have suggested, it turned out to be a vacuum leak. I had several: AAP diaphragm (I capped it off since I don't need it), EGR vacuum modulator diaphragm (rep...

Oil leaking from head gasket

I've had a dripping oil problem for a couple of years. At first it was just a drop or two a night and I assumed it was from the drain plug. Now it's several drops and the bottom of the transmission seems to be wet with fresh engine oil at the end of the day after driving it. I had a good look around...

Re: Absolute newb looking for advice about '86 Terc 4wd

I think mine is a serpentine (the flat kind?). When I go to a parts store they offer me both and ask what kind I need. They're both about the same price if I remember (less than $20).

Re: Absolute newb looking for advice about '86 Terc 4wd

Some of those quotes seem ridiculously high, even for Canada, where I am. $250 for belts? Mine only has one (no AC or power steering), but they're usually less than $20 and it takes 10 minutes to put one on. Timing belt is about $30. It takes more time to replace, but with the right tools it shouldn...

Re: The "breaking bad" Tercel

We got rid of cable many years ago so I've never seen the show, but it explains a funny thing that happened a couple of years ago: We had just parked by the side of the road and a little kid (must have been 5 or 6) walking down the sidewalk holding his dad's hand pointed at our car and started yelli...

Re: whats a manual and an auto 4wd trans worth

I don't know any "official" values, but if I needed one (not just as a spare), I'd pay $500 for an automatic that I knew was in good shape.

Re: '86 2wd standard wagon $2000 (Victoria, British Columbia

Usually I like everything to be manually operated. I'd prefer a manual choke, a manual cooling fan over-ride switch, I don't like power steering, etc. I don't like a manual feature that I have to constantly operate every few seconds (manual trans in a city commute). Plus I don't have to replace a cl...

Either a hatch or sedan. I'm not picky, but I'd like an automatic. It uses the same A55 transmission as the 2nd gens so I'm familiar with it and have a spare (and the "spare" in my 2nd gen hatchback).

By the way, in one of the pictures in the 2wd wagon ad, I think I see a second tercel wagon in the background.

Re: '86 2wd standard wagon $2000 (Victoria, British Columbia

I'm on the lookout for a 1st gen Tercel so I check Used Vic and Craigslist a couple of times a day. There's one in Richmond on the mainland, but I'm having a hell of a time trying to get him/her to answer my e-mails over the last few days.

Re: Tercel Wagon in GA for sale

I wonder how hubcaps like that affect brake cooling.
