If you installed it with everything in place the seal is easy to damage. It could be in crooked, pushed in too far, or not far enough. Good news indeed. That is much less work (and cost) than replacing any of the bearings. Likely any damage was minimal if there are no noises with the proper level of oil. I suspect that a quart low in the 4 quart cap trans axle is not too disastrous if you top it up soon.
