Re: Trans/transaxle removal questions

I have removed, or helped remove, the trans from under a Tercel4wd six or seven times, and I have never found it necessary to remove the input shaft. Except once the trans bell housing appeared to get hung-up on the tunnel, and no matter what we did we could not get it fall out, it was like the tunn...

Re: 82 corolla/tercel 100kmi, $700

You want a turbo better to to the MR2 engine. The 3ac, and the 4ac, does not take to tweaking very well, the 8-valve head limits it. I have tried and ended up blowing head gaskets and burning exhaust valves, it is too troublesome to get more power out of either the 3ac or 4ac, I am doing a 4age swap...

Re: Aisan carburetor issue, I'm stumped????

Welcome to the list, Sounds like you have done a lot of the normal things, but it sure sounds like a vac leak. Sometimes throttle shaft wears out and causes vacuum leak in the carb. Check the vac advance at the distributor, a bad diaphragm is the same as a vac leak. Also a bad TVSV valve could also ...

Re: looks like a good one, CHEAP! Not OR, Seattle

Looks like a great buy, will not last long.

This is not in Oregon, North Bend is about 40 miles east of Settle on I-90 on the way up to Snoqualamy pass. North Bend WA is nowhere near Bend OR.

There is a list member in Spokane looking for a Tercel4wd, it would not be far from him.

Re: 82 corolla/tercel 100kmi, $700

That is an easy one, go 4AGE with either a duel side draft carb set-up, or the later multi-throttle MR2 EFI set-up (you have to buy an adapter manifold, not too costly). You might want to upgrade the rear axle to either a RWD Corolla GTS rear axle, or perhaps a Celica RWD axle. If you want to go all...

Re: Radiator Sealant 'issues'

I have seen black pepper work, and ground red pepper too. It is essentially the same type of plant cellulose that comes in the radiator sealants, but the stop-leaks probably have a better control of the size of the sealant particles. And the stop-leaks are much cheaper than a can of table spice. So ...

Re: WTF with my FRONT MAIN SEAL!!!!

If you installed it with everything in place the seal is easy to damage. It could be in crooked, pushed in too far, or not far enough. I use a small plastic mallet to carefully tap it in by tapping around the seal to keep it even as it gets driven in. A long tube the right size can also be used, but...

Re: Hello! Wanting to buy a 4wd Tercel!

P.S. Nice Beammer BTW. You will find the Tercel4wd much more reliable, less costly and easier to repair than the BMW, regardless of age or condition. ;-)

Re: Throw out bearing failure

Good news indeed. That is much less work (and cost) than replacing any of the bearings. Likely any damage was minimal if there are no noises with the proper level of oil. I suspect that a quart low in the 4 quart cap trans axle is not too disastrous if you top it up soon.

Re: new guy 88 update...smokin in Salt Lake

Yes, Daivd has it exactly correct. There is likely to be a small increase in compression when you add the oil even with good rings. If it goes from say 95 psi to 130 after adding oil, the rings are shot. If it raises only 5 to 10 psi, this is normal. If it passes compression test, than oil burning i...

Re: Radiator Sealant 'issues'

Rer223, Welcome to the list! It is nice to have another experienced mechanic join our ranks. But I have to say I do not know where you get your information from about stop-leak. The typical rad stop leak will not harm an engine or cooling system in anyway. A little known secret is that all car manuf...

Re: Hello! Wanting to buy a 4wd Tercel!

welcome to the list! A Tercel4wd is a great reliable car, but because of their age, you can expect a lot routine, and mostly easy, minor repairs such as replacing hoses, seals, and other minor parts. If you get one with a good transmission (highly recommend the manual trans), and with care, all the ...

Re: 88 Stock SR5 - Berkeley CA

None of those repairs are a problem for me, and the condition of the rest of the car would make that price well worth it. It probably would be a questionable buy if you had to pay a repair shop for all that work to be done, I can get all of that fixed in a Saturday, except perhaps the worn rings (wh...

Re: OMG help

Usually there are no issues with a seal leak, if not too bad, and you keep it topped up with oil. You might try some of that oil stop leak stuff the softens and swells old seals, it might work. I do not recommend anything with any type of "seal conditioner" because it the softens and weake...
