Re: Shipping a transmission cross country?

these are some random pictures I found on the internet. I never did get a picture of how I crated the engine nor the diff/bell housing I shipped, but it was similar to these below. It must be sturdy enough to stay in place and protect the engine, and than it gets covered with cardboard. If you have ...

Re: Shipping a transmission cross country?

I think if you pressure wash the outside after using degreaser, and than flush out the inside with solvent, and allow to dry, it would be fine to ship. You can understand their problem if any old oil leaks out, they would be liable for the damage to all adjoining boxes. I would just get it clean, an...

Re: Banging noise when braking

do not replace the u-joints unless you know they are bad. Always diagnose the problem before you try and fix it. or you waste time and money.

seems to me if the banging only occurs when the brakes are applied, the problem would be with the brakes, not the u-joints.

Re: Burning oil.

that is some kind of mixture plate thing that came on the 3ASC engine (or some such designation), not sure of purpose, but it came on JDM engines of certain years. I think most people just remove it. perhaps the intent was to increase turbulence in the intake at lower speeds to improve fuel droplet ...

Re: unhappy with 80w-90 gear oil

if the problem with GL5 is the syncro alloy reacting with the EP additives, it is possible that toyota formulated their syncros to be compatible with GL5. With a transaxle assembly that mixes front diff and gear box lubricant, than it is somewhat baffling that the FSM says GL4 is acceptable in the t...

Re: unhappy with 80w-90 gear oil

GL 4 is intended for manual trans, and GL-5 for hypoid gear diffs. GL 5 had more Extreme Pressure (EP) adaditives in it. apparently some manufucturers' syncros wear away faster with GL5 gear oil (reacts with the metal and wears about twice as fast). industry fact sheet says the following: GL-5 GEAR ...

Re: Thoughts on how to wire up a TEMP warning light?

Hi superecono4x4, I just noticed your post, i was out of the country (and away from the internet) until about a week ago. Your idea has merit, I have thought about the same thing. The 3ac is real sensative to temperature and in my experiance you do not even have to get it into the red zone to compro...

Re: Dying Dizzy?

perhaps. you should have a bluish white spark, that makes a strong "snap, snap, snap" sound when it is tested.

you might check all our contacts and connections, almost sounds like a loose connection.

Re: WTB: Connecting Rods.

they take both the small and large ends and crush them a bit in a press, and than rebore the hole to factory spec. have them do the small end on the smaller end of the size range so you get a good interference fit.

Re: Burning oil.

there were several manufacturers of .040" over 3a pistons a few years ago, seems someone should have them.

or you can go the 4ac route.

keep searching.

I did not relaize their current musium is in Torrance, i was just in Torrance over the weekend visiting my dad (that is where our family home is located). Darn, will never get to see the one in Torrance.

Perhaps I can see the new one in Tx, where my daughter lives.

Re: WTB: Connecting Rods.

factory connecting rods can be rebuilt by a good machine shop, the rods themselves will not fail. here is what they typically do: 1. check for alignment and cracks. 2. resize both large and mall ends to factory spec 3. install new bolts. 4. balance the set. I do not think factory connecting rods wil...

Re: Fuel Issue

if spark plugs, cap and wires are old, they tend to break down and cause misfires when under load, power drops off. Also, verify that your mechanical advance is free and working properly. if it gets corroded and will not advance you loose power at higher rpms. Try replacing those first if any of the...

Re: Burning oil.

I ran across this situation once before, but the wrist pin has been wearing a deep groove in the side of the cylinder. It was the #4. It could not be saved without sleaving the bore. Cheaper to get another short bock at picknpull for about $100. but a lot more work than just rebuilding the head, whi...

Re: unhappy with 80w-90 gear oil

our transmissions, particularly the syncros, were not really designed to work with the low viscosity extra slippery modern synthetic gear oil. Some say they have used it without issue, but i also know several forum members had the leaky seal and gear clash shifting issue, as I did. A 50/50 mix seems...
