Re: 1984 SR5 292,xxx $3200-Denver

in both of those videos the dummies do not stay in the seats, the seat belt is too flimsy. Also, in the '80 corrola, the steering wheel gets pushed back into the driver. this must have been before the requirement that steering wheels and column does not do that, our steering column can not do that, ...

fell for the marketing and false promise of buying a "safer" new car.

Re: Ignition problem

if you have spark the problem is likely somewhere else. check the timing, try using starter spray down the carb, indicates lack of fuel.

A bad vac leak makes it hard to start, might also check all the vac lines.

Re: Automatic tercel too slow

this is common with auto trans, no overdrive gear and it uses fairly low final drive. larger tires are the only thing to try. If you change out diff, the easiest thing to do is to change out the whole third member and front diff assembly, with ones from the '83-84 manual trans, (3.73:1) . make sure ...

Re: Hello From Calahoo!

Too bad, live and learn. Be more careful to inspect for rust before you buy. You just seem to be having a lot of bad luck. At this point it has to get better. Only one way to go but up! you should be able to locate a Tercel4wd with a decent body, but blow engine or trans, for $150-300, they show up ...

Re: Stuck in third?

I had a Tercel4wd stuck in third, when a shop pulled it apart he found nothing wrong either. sometimes too much wear allows the shift finger to get on the wrong side of the dogs, but there was no significant wear on any of the linkage. So who knows why it happens.

Re: 1984 SR5 292,xxx $3200-Denver

air bags are not a reliable way to improve safety, they seem to kill and injure as many as they claim to save. As an engineer that has worked in the automotive industry (and it aerospace, and a few other areas), I can not see how having an explosive device go off in your face a way to enhance safety...

Re: Installing trailer hitch

use marine grade aluminum, and put sealant or non-metalic gaskets on the bolts, corrosion should not be a problem. With stainless steel bolts, it will never rust in place like the plain steel factory parts always do anyway.

Re: Searching for that hard to find part....

I have heard that Reynolds was going to stop making aluminum foil.

I was wondering where I was going get material to make my hats out of if foil is going off the market. Better stock up now!

Re: wiring harness/fuse box compatibility question

it would problably work, but the problem you will have is they changed colors on some of the wires, and sometimes the connections too. I think the actual engine harness should be the same, I can not think of any differences there, except perhaps the wires to the air conditioner. swapping a connector...

Re: Hello From Calahoo!

that is a remarkable story. the car sacrificed its self to save your life. even than, cars were not really designed to keep you alive in a high speed accident like that. Next time use better judgement when driving into the sun. a lot of the parts look like they can be salvaged, just right for your n...

Re: How to tell the year of à tranny?

it is stamped into the edge of the actual ring gear (the part with the teeth). take a rag and wipe the edge of the gear, and rotate it around so you can examine all of the ring gear, if it is a 4.10, you will see it. It is perhaps 8 mm high, and stamped into the steel the way you would with letter d...

Re: Installing trailer hitch

Nice work. I think attaching a hitch to the stock bumper always seemed like a bad idea, not just because of the rust, but the thin sheet metal built up part is not suited for taking trailer loads like that. I have always thought it would be fun to make all alumiumn rear bumper, and leave the heavy r...

Re: 1981 Tercel Hatch

personally I have liked leather seats for long drives, though real wool is the next best for comfort.

Someday I want to build up some "SR-5" type seats out of leather, with a few "improvements" to ergonomics, just for fun. not stock of course, but keeping with the style and spirit of the Tercel4wd.

Re: Hello From Calahoo!

wow, what a wild ride. looks like it was rusted out so the previous owner made it into a swap buggy. I had thought it would be fun to do something like that with a beater that was not worth restoring (with all that spare time I did not know what do do with...ya, right). Might be worth improving for ...
