Re: 1986 Toyota Tercel 4wd Needs Head Gasket Pasco WA

I am near Arlington, about 20 min North of Everett WA. There is an active market for these cars in the Puget Sound area, good runners get high prices and sell quickly. That is why I am tempted to go there, replace the head gasket and drive it back, it will add to the supply available around here. I ...

Re: Frustrating Oil Leak!

good! you can also buy a gasket for the oil pan, but I notice that the factory uses a sealant there, no gasket. both can work.

Re: Hello from Slovakia

exhaust guides got over heated and worked loose. You should replace all the guides, or at the very least, all the exhaust valve guides. take it to a machine shop. They will knurl the inside of the valve guild bore and than install new valve guides, they are interference fit and if it runs hot, typic...

Re: Is it worth $100

yes, yes, yes! if the body is decent, not a rust bucket than there is nothing that is not worth fixing on this car. It is worth many times more than the price. I have almost 400k miles on my daily driver, and I have had many I fixed up and resold with over 300k miles on them. there are a few forum m...

Re: Tire question

alloys are better than steel wheels any day, they are noticeably stiffer. I kind of like the look too, but those should be 13", you can get toyota alloy wheels in 14" from corrola or mr2 that will fit our cars, but not the same style. I think using 14" alloy wheel with the same rolling dia tire will...

Re: Future of small 4wd vehicles?

regulations perhaps have made the manual trans and manual 4wd obsolete. I am told you can no longer buy a Subaru in manual trans, even as a special order.

One reason I will be keeping my T4wd on road for as long as I can get parts to fix it.

Re: Air Conditioning Coil Resistance

seals dry up and leak, which is usually what goes first and most common. but as splaterdog points out, on a system this old it can be anything that could fail. I am told by our local a/c shop that the systems in toyotas are reliable and very durable. so take your chances.

Re: Transmission problems

finding a good trans, from a parts car or alone, is the best and easiest thing to do. As Xirdneh points out, some parts are still availalbe, but many are not. No way to tell unless you pull it out and take it all apart. If you find another trans to put in it, save the old one for the much needed par...

Re: What is the recommended diameter of the Idle Fuel Discharge Port ?

this is in the throttle body of the carb, which is cast iron as I remember. welding on it may result in warping or distortion of the body, I do not think that is a good plan. something with a lower melting point, like a brazing rod, might be better. Or, no welding, drill out the hole to a larger siz...

Future of small 4wd vehicles?

Suzuki rolls out a high tech "concept" Samari, love that "inclinometer". Unfortunately Suzuki has not imported the Samari to the USA since '94, but I was surprised to see them all over Europe. I want! read about it here: https://gearjunkie.com/suzuki-samurai-e-survivor-tokyo-motor-show-2017-concept-...

Re: Troubles after carburetor rebuild

isolating problems with older cars can be very frustrating, and often discouraging, but almost all problems are fixable once you find them. You have no false hope, it is real hope. but you have to find it first, which often can be more time consuming and frustrating than the actual repair. Be assure...

Re: Front end Shakes

I do not think towing the car will lead to something causing shaking. the center bearing is the one in the middle of the drive shaft for the rear wheels. the drive shaft is two piece, the front where it plugs into the back of the transmission the other end mounts in the tunnel under the floor, this ...

Re: Air Conditioning Coil Resistance

your coil is fine. I had this problem once, had the A/C serviced and it worked fine, several weeks later when I tried it again I got nothing, clutch would not engage. I jumped the clutch w/ 12v to test it and it worked fine, traced the circuit back to a relay on the unit under the glove box. all of ...

Re: What is the recommended diameter of the Idle Fuel Discharge Port ?

I do not recall that there is any idle port on the secondary port, the throttle should should not even open on the secondary until you are above a certain speed with the throttle wide open. The idle mixture is adjusted in the primary barrel only. There may be some secondary fuel ports in the seconda...
