Re: unhappy with 80w-90 gear oil

if the problem with GL5 is the syncro alloy reacting with the EP additives, it is possible that toyota formulated their syncros to be compatible with GL5. With a transaxle assembly that mixes front diff and gear box lubricant, than it is somewhat baffling that the FSM says GL4 is acceptable in the t...

Re: unhappy with 80w-90 gear oil

GL 4 is intended for manual trans, and GL-5 for hypoid gear diffs. GL 5 had more Extreme Pressure (EP) adaditives in it. apparently some manufucturers' syncros wear away faster with GL5 gear oil (reacts with the metal and wears about twice as fast). industry fact sheet says the following: GL-5 GEAR ...

Re: Thoughts on how to wire up a TEMP warning light?

Hi superecono4x4, I just noticed your post, i was out of the country (and away from the internet) until about a week ago. Your idea has merit, I have thought about the same thing. The 3ac is real sensative to temperature and in my experiance you do not even have to get it into the red zone to compro...

Re: Dying Dizzy?

perhaps. you should have a bluish white spark, that makes a strong "snap, snap, snap" sound when it is tested.

you might check all our contacts and connections, almost sounds like a loose connection.

Re: WTB: Connecting Rods.

they take both the small and large ends and crush them a bit in a press, and than rebore the hole to factory spec. have them do the small end on the smaller end of the size range so you get a good interference fit.

Re: Burning oil.

there were several manufacturers of .040" over 3a pistons a few years ago, seems someone should have them.

or you can go the 4ac route.

keep searching.

Re: Toyota Museum Moving From CA To TX!

I did not relaize their current musium is in Torrance, i was just in Torrance over the weekend visiting my dad (that is where our family home is located). Darn, will never get to see the one in Torrance.

Perhaps I can see the new one in Tx, where my daughter lives.

Re: WTB: Connecting Rods.

factory connecting rods can be rebuilt by a good machine shop, the rods themselves will not fail. here is what they typically do: 1. check for alignment and cracks. 2. resize both large and mall ends to factory spec 3. install new bolts. 4. balance the set. I do not think factory connecting rods wil...

Re: Fuel Issue

if spark plugs, cap and wires are old, they tend to break down and cause misfires when under load, power drops off. Also, verify that your mechanical advance is free and working properly. if it gets corroded and will not advance you loose power at higher rpms. Try replacing those first if any of the...

Re: Burning oil.

I ran across this situation once before, but the wrist pin has been wearing a deep groove in the side of the cylinder. It was the #4. It could not be saved without sleaving the bore. Cheaper to get another short bock at picknpull for about $100. but a lot more work than just rebuilding the head, whi...

Re: unhappy with 80w-90 gear oil

our transmissions, particularly the syncros, were not really designed to work with the low viscosity extra slippery modern synthetic gear oil. Some say they have used it without issue, but i also know several forum members had the leaky seal and gear clash shifting issue, as I did. A 50/50 mix seems...

Re: 3SGE swap - will it fit/bolt in?

the 3E is the odd 12-valve head? does it have the distributor off the end of the cam? If so, it might have a clearance issue on the T4wd. either convert to distributorless, or cut a hole in your fire wall. I do not see a 3E engine listing on the Toyota Wiki page, but shows it was in the 3rd gen Terc...

Re: 3SGE swap - will it fit/bolt in?

I think all of the 3a and 4a engines have the same mount locations, and rear bolt pattern. the 3E is the fuel injected version of the 3A as I recall. it should work I would think.

how are you making an "altezza" trans work, is that not from a Lexus? Front wheel drive?

Re: unhappy with 80w-90 gear oil

I used synthetic MTF and found it was so slippery the syncros did not work, got a gear clash with each shift. It also leaked out all the old seals like crazy.

I changed to a 50/50 mix of synthetic MTF and regular gear oil and it solved both problems.

Re: Unidentified Problem.

replace your fuel filter as a precaution (they are cheap). when they get partially plugged, they act fine at low speeds and low loads, but when there is a large fuel demand, like in a fast acceleration or going up a big hill, they starve the carb of fuel and it bucks and stutters. might also be a ma...
