Tacoma Mechanic

I have a 1984 that needs work. Does anyone know of a good mechanic in the Tacoma, Washington area that knows these cars and likes to work on them?

Turns out I didn't have to take off the steering wheel, but did anyway to get more room to work. I had to get the broken ignition cylinder out of the housing. The way to do this is to push a little button at the 12 o'clock position on the housing in with the tip of a curved knife. At the same time, ...

I've tried both keys that fit the ignition, flipped both ways. I've tried varying the depth also.

I guess I'll have to pull the ignition cylinder. I think this involves pulling the steering wheel though. Bummer.

IGNITION SWITCH STUCK

The key goes in and out just fine, but I can't turn the key out of the lock position. I've tried jiggling the steering wheel as I try to turn the key, I've tried tapping the key with a nylon hammer as I try to turn the key.

Anybody know how to fix this?

Rims

The rims are off an Audi, maybe a 4000.
14" with 185/60-14 tires.

I also have a 13" set, original Toyota with studded tires on them.

Welcome to the website. I am interested in seeing pictures of your car. Is it the same as the U.S. 4WD Tercel?

I actually live up on Puget Sound now, in Washington. Steilacoom. I did live up by the zoo when I lived in Portland though. Didn't have problems driving up Burnside then. The engine is getting old.

OLD PETE

This is Old Pete. 1984 Toyota Tercel 4WD 6SP SR5. Bought in Portland, Oregon in 2001 with 162K miles. Best $1000 I ever spent! He came with an extra set of studded tires on rims for going up to Mt. Hood in the winter. I bought him as a third car for me and my wife, but he soon became my primary car ...

Hey,

I'm trying to figure out how to add images. I click on the Img button, but all that comes up is [img].

Probably something simple, could use some help.

Thanks for the reply.

Is there a particular NGK plug I should look for?

4A-C upgrade

Is it worth upgrading to the 4A-C engine from the stock engine? Specifically in terms of power and fuel economy?

Do these engines come with a Weber carb, and if not, what is the benefit of a Weber carb? Where do you get the carb from, how much does one cost, and how easy is it to install one?

inclinometer

I've got an 84 with the inclinometer, so 83 wasn't the only year. I just found this site yesterday too, really happy to see that there are others out there like me!
