Re: Fuel pump installment

I feel as though there's an air leak somewhere. The idle sounds way better than before, but there's still a random skip in there when it's idling and when I accelerate that kicks the power down a bit. So many old hoses on this thing. There's gotta be more than one vacuum line leaking. Most of the sm...

Re: Fuel pump installment

Ok, she's running down the road good now, no hesitation, so the pump was definitely bad. Fuel filter is still only running 1/2 full so that seems odd. After driving about 10 mins total I popped the hood. There was some black smoke coming from under the carb, just thought it might be dripped oil or f...

Re: Fuel pump installment

4th gear worked like a charm and it slid in! I'm just waiting an hr or so for the gasket sealant to dry a bit before I crank her up.

Re: Fuel pump installment

The lever on the new arm doesn't move easily. In fact I didn't think it moved at all until I put some real pressure on it then it traveled a bit, enough for me to hear the diaphragm and have air come out. Think the spring is just tight, so going to flex it a bit to try to get it to loosen up. Then t...

Re: Fuel pump installment

Ha I tried! But even if it was the insulator, it's been on the heat shield, which I connected to the new pump and it's just not mounting to the engine flush. As if it's missing about 1/4 inch.

Re: Fuel pump installment

Could I not just use self forming high temp silicone gasket product to make a gasket of required thickness? Or would it compress too much?

Re: Fuel pump installment

Yea the width of the heat shield is decently thick, but definitely not a 1/2 inch!

Re: Fuel pump installment

Well shoot, I don't have the first clue of how to find a compatible spacer/insulator in NZ. anybody in NZ have a clue? guess i'll start by calling the boys down at the auto parts store tomorrow and spending the first 10 mins just trying to make sure we're talking about the same thing. Thanks everyon...

Re: Fuel pump installment

There wasn't a thick plastic insulator when I took it off. Just the heat shield (and old gaskets) between the head and original pump. I did notice the original pump, with the spring on the lever, probably had enough give to be sucked in by the bolts...whereas the new pump doesn't have any play in th...

Re: Fuel filter level?

The pumps are similar in dimension...just the original has a tapered lever at the end and a spring on it, while the new one doesn't. the mounting dimensions are the same. I went ahead and tried to install, but am having problems getting the new lever to slide into the camshaft where the mount will s...

Re: Fuel pump installment

Ok, thanks geometry is the same. I tried reinserting the old fuel pump, and it's not sitting flush either. I'm worried about damaging the camshaft sprocket or something if I push it in too hard. Took a photo inside to see what was in the way. Tried turning the little camshaft sprocket. Nothing givin...
