1984 Toyota Tercel 4wd manual near Bellingham/Seattle $500

Just saw this ad on craigslist and thought it'd be good here. Hopefully it's still there, ad's 17 days old. To be clear, this isn't my car.

Re: Mysterious problem with cooling system

Ah shoot, I have an extension that converts Fahrenheit to Celsius I think it made the numbers disappear in the post, sorry about that.

Upper hose - 180 F
Lower hose - 80 F
Block near temp sender - 205 F
Block near oil filter - 205 F
Thermostat housing - 200 F

Re: Mysterious problem with cooling system

I believe you said you had an infrared temp gun. Did you check temperatures with it when your gauge was reading high? Air in the cooling system will not bleed out when sitting. Also, when you had weird things happen did you put full heat on inside the car and turn the fan on max. This is like addin...

Re: Mysterious problem with cooling system

if you are getting heat out of the heater, the temp gauge should show a noticable drop in temp. It takes about a minute or two to show, but it will drop a bit. That heat is coming out of the engine coolant, if the heat is going in to the passanger compartment, the temp has to drop. If the gauge goe...

Re: Mysterious problem with cooling system

that would be pretty frustrating to have the temp gauge in the red the whole time. I would want to verify proper temperture with a separate gauge, just to be sure. that would spook me even if I knew for sure it was a bogus reading. Yes, I had a knot in my stomach the entire drive. I'm thinking I'll...

Re: Mysterious problem with cooling system

So on the drive home today the temp went well into the red pretty quickly. The system had sucked a bit of coolant from the reservoir so I topped it up before I left. I thought it was a bit crazy to be overheating so quickly so I pulled over and let it idle while I checked everything. There were no s...

Re: Mysterious problem with cooling system

Mark - the needle is always right at the center when it's idling in a driveway and the thermostat is definitely open in that case, it's when I've been driving at highway speeds and get to traffic that it seems like the thermostat is getting stuck. It will stay at about 3/4 or higher until I sit at i...

Re: Mysterious problem with cooling system

Antifreeze levels are good, when it's cold the rad is full to the brim and the reservoir is at the full line. I just popped in the new temperature sender from lordco, the engine was warm when I did it I hope I didn't totally mess up in doing so. I think I let air in the system which caused it to get...

Re: Mysterious problem with cooling system

Okay so I drove with the fan always on and it weirdly made it run hotter, but more stable. It eventually climbed higher than I'd like so I jumped out and plugged the sensor back in which brought the temperature down after a bit. Again the bottom hose was cold and the top was hot. I think the fan cou...

Re: Mysterious problem with cooling system

Thanks for the replies,
NWMO - I'll try that on my commute home and give an update.

Arch - I had the whole fan assembly/everything out and it looks relatively clean. No squirrel nests that I could see!

Thanks! Glad to be a part of the club

Re: Wiper blade recommendation.

I'll add to the echo chamber and say Bosch!!

Bought a cheapo pair from lordco this winter one flew off on a bridge during a snowstorm which was pretty interesting. Luckily I still had the old Bosch to put on. Better to have a streaky old blade than one which flies off randomly.
