Re: fpm's 85

to ease your mind, yes. the pcv, vacuum advance on the dizzy (bottom nip) and the brake booster(obviously) still have vacuum. it idles pretty terrible i'll admit but it runs great and has gobs more power than the been-had-3A. I definitely cut a few corners with the current carb setup and i'd like to...

fpm's 85

I'm a tinkerer and I thought I'd start a thread where I can share ideas/fixes I come up with for my tercel. I have a 1985 sr5 with 247k on the odo and 200k on a 4AC from an 84 corolla. I've been on the forum for a while but haven't had a running tercel until about a month ago. I showed some of the i...

Re: 4AC acquisition!

thanks again, dlb. the trans plug was much easier. I got it all put back together just a few minutes ago, it starts right up. sounds nice. and yes, the headliner was nasty. much better now. I used a product called blue coral. I wasn't expecting to get this far into an interior restoration, but the f...

Re: 4AC acquisition!

Looks like the 4A-C you put in has the "wavy" valve cover... I'm not familiar with the story behind wavy vs straight valve covers. enlighten me? I'm also not concerned at all with the emissions stuff, no offense. I agree it would probably run a titch better with properly functioning diaph...

Re: 4AC acquisition!

I thought I'd update this thread. I have the engine installed and driving around town! I had been tracking a vacuum leak for a few days from a surging idle, until I de-smogged it. also some cats had made a home in the back of the wagon at some point and I couldn't take the smell anymore so I pulled ...

Re: Zen and the Toyota Tercel Wagon

Excellent thread!
There really is something about these little cars. I've never been one to hang on to cars, no matter how much money I pour into them.
but somehow I've sat on a rusted engine-less 86 tercel for a year now. Patiently day-dreaming of getting it running again..
so peculiar.

Re: 4AC acquisition!

thank-you dlb, I notice he mentions he swapped in a 4ALC, which is transverse mounted right? I have a 3a head ready to go and was debating swapping entire heads or just the manifolds.. or just leaving it. It makes sense if the intake/exhaust manifold has to be swapped, that the water pump swap as we...

4AC acquisition!

Hey guys, it took almost a year; but I finally pulled a good running 4AC from a 1984 AE86. $100! So I've got all the mounts/pan swapped over and now i'm looking at the water pump and the intake/exhaust manifold. The water pump looks like it will run on the same belt in the same position, do I have t...

3A 4A 4AFE 5AFE 7AFE etc...

alright, I just need a solid answer on this one. The 3AC in my t4wd is in need of complete rebuild and it's adding up beyond my budget(see "oil & coolant in cylinders"). It will need to be bored out, plus turning the crank, all new resized bearings and pistons etc.. SO; can I put my 3A...

Re: Coolant in Oil and Cylinders...

update* Pulled the engine and got it down to block and crank. the knock was clearly the #3 rod bearing. almost 1/8" of play up and down. the horse-trade fell through so i'm rebuilding it.(because #1 psi was ~90, which caused the low oil) i'm taking the block to the machine shop this week to ver...

WTB: parts for engine rebuild

Hey I pulled the engine recently after it developed a knock. I'm looking at boring .040 over so I was just wondering if anyone had anything laying around. Will need/want some pistons/rings, rod/crank bearings, gaskets, rear main seal, oil pump etc.. Just thought I'd ask before I go buy all the stuff...

Re: Coolant in Oil and Cylinders...

I was able to horse-trade for a parts tercel over the weekend, apparently the only thing 3A/4A powered in a 250 miles radius.. oi. The car has been sitting, but the engine purrs nicely. So for now i'm just going to do a straight swap to get it back on the road, and hopefully get around to a full bui...
