Driving for Distance
In 30+ years of Terceldom, I have learned many things; but these are very important to make your machine last: The 5 speed: 1/If your synchros start to wear, and the shifting isn't smooth, try this: When shifting to 3rd is a rough shift: esp. from second or 4th: Clutch in; shift to neutral; clutch o...

Re: SPECTRA FUEL TANK
I commented on the filling problem, not the overflowing in the heat (passive overflow). I could see that being affected by a lack of vacuum from the canister. The tank maintains a small amount of vacuum even after the engine is shut off, which pulls the vapors into the canister. I guess it could pul...

Yep--but most of it is melted again!
Did you find the FWD that you were looking for? Yes--I meant the post--or what part of it?

Re: Powering up for testing
I have changed 3 wagons from auto to FWD. You need a good flywheel/pressure plate/clutch/throw-out bearing ass'y, as well as the clutch pedal ass'y, and the cable and shifter ass'y (FWD shifter different than 4WD). Don't skimp on the quality of the parts you use as it's a bugger to have to take the ...

AN IMPORTANT READ! Why never use 4WD mode on dry pavement?
I wondered, and theorized, why my 87 4WD will "lock" in 4WD mode and be impossible to shift back to 2WD after driving, even for a very short time, on dry surfaces. Having owned an '85 4WD Auto with a broken, and removed, crown gear in the front differential, and having been told by the sel...

Re: Life with Leonard
To Glet71; I once had a lube shop in Kamloops change my transmission and diff oil, and they put in too heavy an oil. This was in October, and as the weather got colder the trans shifted with more and more difficulty, necessitating double-clutching to get into second and third. The oil broke down som...

Re: An Owner's Experience-Evolution of the Tercel-Series 1 a
Yes, and I thought, after low km failure of '81 Tercel SR5 drive axles, that they were just a crappy design and and that the rebuilt axles were poorly constructed. That may have been true, but when I followed a knowledgeable mechanic's advice and stopped hard accelerating while turning, I was able t...

Warping Rotors & low power engines?
The first two links found by Google "What makes rotors warp?": http://www.examiner.com/article/there-s-no-such-thing-as-warped-brake-rotors http://www.stoptech.com/technical-support/technical-white-papers/-warped-brake-disc-and-other-myths The reasons given at these links, for the pulsing ...

Re: An Owner's Experience-Evolution of the Tercel-Series 1 a
Good Observations, Petros; My brother told me he thought they were just ugly--but his GM pickups are all from the late 90's--all the earlier ones he owned fell apart. And none of them ever went over 500,000K, or, as in the case of that Oregon Teacher, over 732,000 miles! Toyota sure fixed that by go...

Re: 87-88 Headlights
An appointment an hour away was cancelled, giving me time for a thorough inspection of the 87 headlights. I have realized that somewhere in the past I have dealt with this type of light before, and when I took a closer look I think I remembered that it was a Tercel. I removed the R & L lens/refl...

Re: 87-88 Headlights
To ARCHINSTL: My ramps are covered up with all the left-over fodder of my engine swap, but I will post some photos when I get things straightened up in there. I know what you mean about "ALL associated parts". The 4A that I installed in the '86 which I described to Petros in this post had ...
